JAMES C. WISE, JR. MAJOR UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
IN MEMORY OF Major James C. Wise, Jr. United States Air Force Killed in Action - 23 December 1965 - Republic of Vietnam While assigned to 1131 st Special Activity Squadron of the 13th Air Force and serving as a Pilot Advisor to the 522nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Air Force of the Republic of Vietnam, Major Wise was leading a flight of three A1H Skyraiders on a mission in Hua Nghai Province about 10 miles west of Saigon. While on a prestrike mission in support of an Army of the Republic of Vietnam operation, the flight engaged a Viet Cong position. Despite heavy enemy fire, Major Wise pursued the attack with complete disregard for his own safety. His aircraft was hit by enemy fire on his second pass and he was killed in the crash.As a result of his outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty, many friendly lives were saved. Major Wise was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. He was also the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Air Medal in addition to numerous service medals and foreign decorations. Major James Carl Wise, Jr., United States Air Force, was born 5 June 1930 in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Boy’s High School and Georgia Tech, and subsequently graduated from the University of Alabama. He received his commission from the Air Force Cadet Program, and served tours of duty in the United States and Europe. He was selected for graduate school at the Naval War College and received a Master’s Degree. He arrived in Vietnam and began combat missions in late November 1965. His ashes were placed in the Gulf of Mexico.
