Hon Tre Island - July 1968 |
|
July 68
Flying to the north towards Hon Tre Island. This gives you a good perspective of the shape of the island. The Air Force radar and Army Hawk battery on top of the island, the Army signal corp. TV station half way up the left side of the island and the Air Force and Army Cantonment area at the narrow left side bottom.

POL Fire |
|
Looking west from the Top Site over the top of the TV station towards Nha Trang AFB.
A bladder filled with gasoline that was ignited by a flare caused the smoke on the mountain behind Nha Trang. These bladders were dropped by C130’s right after TET to clear out resistance in the mountains. It was one way to get rid of hard to find VC hiding in caves and holes. Any and all oxygen was used by these tremendous fires killing anything above or below ground. This went on for days. |

Wash Day |

On a lighter note, remember washday? When was the last day your underwear was washed with 10 or 20 other’s? How many of you took these gray things home? |

Water (H2O) Run |

Riding in the back of a Deuce and a half making a water run with the water trailer tagging a long behind. In the background was the original radar site as it was before the building construction started. |

Hooch & Guard Tower |
|
A lone hooch with a guard tower. I am not sure what this building was used for. You will notice, it was before our Typhoon in “68” no sandbags on the roofs and no sandbags stacked around this hooch. |

Sober & Me |

Sober and me. Sober was named by my hooch mate William Boyes, who wasn’t sober very often. Behind me is the AIR FORCE side of the road, to my left is the Army side of the road. These hooches do have sandbags around them.

The Back Bay |
|
The back bay, I guess at one time this was the main entrance. Not while I was there, we did go down there to shoot our M16s but that was about it. This area was heavily guarded with Trip Flares and Clay Moore Mines. We use to watch Charles landing his little fishing boats and carry stuff up in the jungle all the time. It was useless to call the navy, but the time they got there the boats were long gone. |

Jungle Side |

The jungle side view riding to work. If you looked the other way most of the time you would see nothing but space and ocean because the ride hugged the mountainside.

Riding the LCU back to Hon Tre from the Nha Trang, on one of the many trips to flush a toilet or to just walk around with my M16 and look like a warrior, we see a patrol boat has stopped a local boat for an insp |

Red Horse Guard |

A Red Horse airman, guards a Vietnamese worker during a routine days work. The hole to the left is going to be the foundation for the permanent radar operations building. When I left in Oct 68, the wooden sides and roof were on. |
