The People of Pyramid

Pyramid was the people... GI's from all over the country doing all kinds of jobs and mostly just trying to stay alive and make it though their year.  To make Pyramid work required all kinds of skills, radar maintenance, power supply folks, administrators, radio repair/operators, security, and finally, flight follow techs and weapons controllers.  We even had a carpenter.  Though in the midst of a fair sized Vietnamese city, between the language and cultural barriers and the ever present threat of attack, we stuck pretty close together.  Sometimes it was almost like being on a remote site while sitting on the edge of a city.  We were a pretty tight bunch while I was there and I don't think there was one fight in the entire year I was there.  At least not amongst ourselves.  These men and comrades are forever etched in my memory.  It was a time I don't think any of us will forget.

Work Day

Getting short but still had to pull a work day at the site.

Hot time in Saigon

I went down to meet my dad in Saigon and he treated me and some of my buddies to dinner. From left to right: me, can't remember his name, SP5 Chet Neville (155th AHC), buddy from my days with the 963rd, and "Charlie Tuna" from Paris Control.

My Old Man

My dad and I on the balcony of his hotel in April 1966. He was on an inspection trip from TAC HQ.

Me at Pleiku

On my way back from trip to Saigon to meet my father. I don't know how I got away with that uniform. No USAF insignia, VNAF rank (center of the shirt), and Go To Hell hat. I wore that same get up most of the time I was in 'Nam and no one ever said a word. Even in Saigon. Picture was taken in April 1966.

Guess Who is "SHORT"

The cone on Gay's head was our drinking "cup". It held approximately a six pack and half, if memory serves. It was supposedly the nose cone from a Huey rocket pod, but I doubt it. It was just there at the Darlac when we arrived and I adopted it and christened it as the drinking cup. There was no way to sit it down, so once it was full, it had to be empited (oh darn).
